Given that each of the transcendent perfections, generosity and so on, is brought about by the perfection preceding it, the generation of wisdom could certainly be explained in terms of the same causal sequence.1This is the position of Tsongkhapa in his commentary on the “Wisdom Chapter,” Spyod ’jug shes rab le’u’i blo gsal ba. It is reasserted also by Gyaltsap in his commentary Rgyal sras ’jug ngogs. See Karma Phuntsho, Mipham’s Dialectics, 30–31 and 229n32. See also Viehbeck, Polemics, 81. In the present context, however, we interpret the words "for the sake of" in the sense of a king who goes off to war accompanied by all four divisions of his army, which go with him "for his sake" that is, as auxiliaries to help him achieve his purpose. Accordingly, the actual and uncommon cause of the prajñāpāramitā in the aspect of result, the primordial wisdom of omniscience, is [the pāramitā of] wisdom, which is the principal aspect of the path. It is this that removes the two kinds of obscuration and actualizes ultimate primordial wisdom endowed with the two kinds of knowledge. The other pāramitās, by contrast, are unable to do this. Indeed, it is only when the five preceding pāramitās are seized by wisdom that they for the first time truly receive their name and lead to buddhahood.
