If something that abides in the state of its own nonexistence cannot (for as long as it so remains) be a real thing, it stands to reason that it can never be possible for it to become a real thing. For as long as there is no assumption of existence, there is no relinquishing of nonexistence. Since there is no laying aside of the character of nonexistence, no occasion for coming into existence[p.186]The Wisdom Chapter

is possible. Therefore, how can a nonexistent thing ever become an existent thing? Clearly it cannot. Since it is impossible for the state of nonexistence to turn into the state of existence, to speak of nonexistent things becoming existent things is mere words. Because it is simply through the “state of being a nonthing” that the “state of being a thing” is completely excluded, there can be no transformation of the former into the latter. And although there is no such transformation, if one clings to the idea that there is, one should consider that all such things, shoots and so on, are the transformations of a barren woman’s son.120It is important not to be bemused by the effects of linguistic structures. A nonexistent thing is not “a thing that does not exist.” It is simply nothing. A nonexistent pot is not, in any sense, a pot. And as the text and commentary make clear, it is nonsense to detach things from their existence or nonexistence and imagine that they can pass from the one to the other. The impression that they can and do so arises simply through the hallucinatory effect of language.
