In speaking like this, the Sāṁkhyas are undermining their own main thesis. Although they do not mean, and do not say, that manifestation is absent at the time of the cause, and that it arises newly, what they have just said in fact comes to this. If manifestation is present at the time of the cause, no distinction is made between “manifest” and “nonmanifest” and it follows that (results) are manifest from the beginning, and this contradicts the Sāṁkhyas’ assertion. It also violates common sense. For if, for the Sāṁkhyas, the result is truly manifest in the cause, it follows that when they eat their food, they consume their own excrement! Moreover, with the money they use to buy cloth, let them rather buy seeds of flax, from which the fabric comes, and wear them! That, says Shāntideva, is how they might substantiate their tenet!
