The Sāṁkhyas say, however, that pleasure does not have to depend on cloth and so forth; it is the permanent nature of the primal substance. If that is so, however, it follows that pleasure can never be averted and must always be perceived. For whatever state, pleasure and so on, may be observed, it can never diverge from its previous nature. But these states are never permanently perceived, and therefore the assertion of the Sāṁkhyas is untenable. They insist, however, that although the guṇas have a permanent existence, they have the particular feature of being sometimes manifest and sometimes not. Thus, there is no certainty as to their constant appearance. Our answer to this is that if pleasure and so on were not at all manifest, no one would know about them and it would be inappropriate to speak of their existence. But the Sāṁkhyas do not in fact claim this.
