The Sāṁkhyas may object, however, that their position is tenable because inanimate objects like sound are in fact the causes of pleasure and the rest. But on the ultimate level, things have already been shown to be nonexistent, while on the conventional level, the Sāṁkhyas are guilty of contradicting themselves. For they claim that the cause of woolen cloth is the guṇas (pleasure and so forth) and then they go on to say that the effect of woolen cloth is pleasure and so on. In other words, pleasure is made both the cause and the effect of cloth, which is ridiculous. It is as if one were to say that a man is both the father and the son of the same person. If the Sāṁkhyas protest that there are different kinds of pleasure and so on, this militates against the single nature of pleasure. It is also manifestly at variance with perception.
