| English | If God, the cause, is beginningless, and if he is a direct cause of unobstructed power, how is it that all his created effects have beginnings?111It is in the nature of a cause that when it is fully operative and unobstructed, its effects appear fully and immediately. But in the case of the universe, this is manifestly not so. The phenomena of the universe arise in sequence. For according to this description, it is impossible to say that these effects arise only at a given moment and not before. They would have to exist from all time, for it does not make sense for them to be perceived only intermittently. And the absurd consequence would follow that the men and women living today have existed from all eternity. |
