But who, or what, it might be asked, has so arranged matters in this way— that there is this variety in the cause? The answer is that no extraneous agent has contrived it. And given that it is impossible for the seed to arise in the absence of its own particular cause, this variety arises from a variety in an even earlier cause. Again, it might be asked, if the potency within the cause is various, how is it that a present seed of barley gives rise to a barley plant and not a rice plant?108That is, how is the manifest order of the universe accounted for? In point of fact, it is not that the present barley seed contains within itself, as it were autonomously, an indefinite variety of potencies. For it is from the power of previous causes that it is projected as an entity that generates according to its kind. This is simply the nature of things, which no one can alter. It therefore follows that what arises uncaused must either be eternal or else nonexistent. On the other hand, since things are observed occasionally, in both space and time, it is established that they have causes.
