It may be argued that since the various elements that make up a lotus (stem, petals, and so on) are not found in the lotus’s cause, there are no grounds for claiming that there is a cause for such a variety. But if the results were actually present in the causes, how could there be a causal relationship between them?107Such a position has the same weakness as the Sāṁkhya view (that results preexist in their causes) debated with earlier. Satkaryavada precludes causation. On the other hand, one can see that they grow out of the grain. And since a variety in the result is generated by a variety in the cause, the root text says that, according to the variety in the result, a division or variety is shown to exist within the power of the cause.
