English

It is the mind (which is different from the shoot) that, inferring that the shoot is a result, understands that it was preceded by its cause, namely, a seed. It does this by separately considering seeds and shoots and then concluding, by a process of valid cognition, that they are linked in a relation of cause and effect. However, if the valid knowledge of a causal relationship is not already assumed, it does not arise simply by observing the shoot. What therefore proves the real existence of consciousness, in other words, the very thing that is in turn taken as evidence for the existence of the cognized object? On the ultimate level, it cannot be established by a self-knowing consciousness, or by an other-knowing consciousness.
