On the other hand, suppose that they are not simultaneous; suppose that feeling comes first and consciousness later. In that case, it could be argued, the mind will take on the aspect of the feeling. But if feeling precedes and consciousness ensues, it must be admitted that when the consciousness arises, the actual feeling is no longer present: there is just the recollection of it. All thoughts of things past are memories. And since what is past does not exist in the present moment, it is impossible to have a clear (and direct) experience of it. Feeling thus becomes impossible. If we examine the memory of something in the past, we find something that is deceptive. For what is past no longer remains as an object in the present. And the consciousness of the past moment—the subject when the feeling was being experienced—is now no more; it can no longer experience anything. Logic shows that the feeling in question cannot be experienced by the present and future moments of consciousness. Accordingly, the feeling that is past can now be experienced only as a memory; the present feeling cannot be experienced; and the future is not yet here and so cannot be felt by the present consciousness.
