Yet, the infinitesimal particle of the sense faculty cannot penetrate the infinitesimal particle of the object. Since they are partless, there is no possibility, no opportunity, for them to join or intermingle. In relation to each other, they enjoy a status of perfect parity. Therefore, if two particles touch on one side only, and do not have contact through and through, they cannot be partless. Leaving aside the particles that do not have contact, and considering only those particles that do, if they were to have contact in all their parts, they must interpenetrate and melt into each other. But since there is no possibility, no opportunity, for interpenetration (given that all such particles are equal), they do not interpenetrate. If they do not interpenetrate, the particles do not mingle into one. And if there is no mingling, they do not meet. For if partless particles meet, they must have uniform contact in every direction, for contact from only one side is impossible. How therefore is it acceptable to speak of contact between partless entities? It is impossible for them to have contact either from one side or from all sides. And so, Shāntideva asks his opponents, if they have ever observed contact between partless entities, let them show it to him and it will be established. He knows, of course, that no such demonstration is possible.
