| English | Consequently, although the body does not exist as such, it is through ignorance that the idea “body” occurs to the mind on the basis of the assemblage of physical parts. Aside from being a mere label, the “body” has no existence as a thing in itself. It is just as when a pile of stones is mistaken for a man because it looks like a man. As long as the conditions are fulfilled with regard to a specific shape, the body will continue to appear as a person. But when these conditions are not complete, one will not impute a man, as when, for instance, a change of sex occurs, or during the development of an embryo, or when the body is cremated and only ashes are left. And the same will apply mutatis mutandis for a woman. In just the same way, for as long as the circumstances for the imputation of a body persist (the presence of the members, hands, and so on) and as long as they are mutually interrelated, a body will appear. But in themselves, these parts are not the body. They are like individual pieces of flesh and bone. |
