English

If, on the other hand, an entire body, complete with all its parts, subsists in the hands and all the other members, this means that there are as many bodies as there are bodily parts. But this is impossible, since we cling to the body as a single whole. Therefore, since there is no body, or rather, since no body appears when we search for it analytically within the outer or inner fields of the six sense faculties, how can the parts be said to have the body within them? They cannot. Finally, since there is no basis for the imputation of the body other than its parts, how can it be said to exist at all? It cannot. The passage in the root text (stanzas 78 and 79) that tells how the foot is not the body and so on shows that the body is not one with its parts. On the other hand, stanza 80, which begins “If the body . . . ” indicates that the body does not exist as something separate from its interrelated parts.
