In their reply, the Madhyamikas employ the same kind of reasoning, pointing out that they and their opponents both accept that the aggregates that form the basis of an action and the aggregates that underlie the experience of its fruit are different from each other. On the other hand, a permanent self that is separate from the aggregates on both occasions would necessarily be unconscious and unchanging, and, being immutable, would be inert and actionless. Since it is proved by logic, the Madhyamikas say, this argument is as valid for their opponents as it is for themselves. Both parties must therefore abandon such a permanent self. It is futile, the root text says, to claim that the argument shows that only the Madhyamikas are at fault.85In other words, it is claimed that the Madhyamaka denial of a permanent self renders karma unintelligible. The Madhyamikas reply that their opponents’ doctrine of a changeless self has the same fault. The Madhyamikas go on to say, however, that whereas in their tradition[p.143]The Wisdom Chapter

they are able to remove this fault, their opponents are never able to do so. For, they say, when the Buddha said that the result of an action ripens on the doer of an action, he posited it thus in terms of a single mental continuum.
