The Naiyayikas divide knowledge objects into six categories. As they say, “Substance (dravya), quality (guṇa), action (karma), universal (sāmānya), instantiation (viśeṣa), and inherence (samavāya): these are the six categories.” (1) Substance is further divided into nine: self, time, particle, direction, space, earth, water, fire, and wind. The first five are permanent substances, while the remaining four are impermanent substances. Substance is defined as that which is the support for action and the possession of qualities (properties). (2) These qualities are twenty-four in number, comprising thirteen properties (sorrow and so on) of the self, followed by eleven properties that are common to the other substances (such as number and size). (3) There are five kinds of action: extension, contraction, lifting up, laying down, and displacement. These are followed by (4) universals, both pervasive and restricted, and (5) instantiations, which are diverse individual things. Finally, there is (6) inherence, the mutual connection that binds things together (whether in terms of identity or difference and so on), of which there are many categories.
