| English | The Sāṁkhyas reply that, even though the apprehension of form is not experienced as having the nature of an apprehension of sound, the nature of consciousness is nevertheless one. They say that it is just as when a dancer dresses in the costume of a god in the morning and as a demon in the afternoon. In the same way, the earlier consciousness of sound appears later in the aspect of a consciousness of form and can therefore see. But the consequence of this is that the previous sound-consciousness is impermanent because it loses its earlier mode and assumes another configuration. If a new mode is assumed that is unlike the earlier mode but is still not considered to be other than it (even though the two are manifestly different), then, as Shāntideva ironically observes, this is a kind of identity unknown and unheard of anywhere in the world. It is something unique that has never occurred before! In other words, things are said to be one when they cannot by their very nature be divided. They are said to be distinct when they can be divided. It is a manifest contradiction to say that things are “one” when they are plainly seen to be divisible into individual items. If things are still “one” even though they are visibly divided into individual items, the absurd consequence follows that everything must be a single thing. Thus it is not that the dancer is actually different at various moments (namely, when he assumes different guises)[p.139]The Wisdom Chapter |
