The Madhyamikas admit that the Shrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats are no longer subject to rebirth as the result of karma and defilement. They deny however that they come to the peace of nirvana like lamps that are extinguished, as the Shrāvaka believe. On the contrary, they have all the causes unhindered for the production of bodies of a mental nature. How so? It is because while the craving (sred pa) that is in the continuum of the[p.125]The Wisdom Chapter

Arhats is not defiled in being engendered through self-clinging, they still have an undefiled ignorance, which consists in the fact that their knowledge of objects is impeded by the effects of time and distance—as the Shrāvakas themselves admit. This being so, why should they not have an undefiled craving? Since they have not reversed the cause, namely, ignorance, they are unable to overcome its effect.67Maudgalyāyana was ignorant of where his mother had been reborn, and Shariputra did not know when the seed of liberation had arisen in a certain person’s mind-stream. Khenpo Kunzang Pelden mentions this in his commentary on the Bodhicaryāvatāra. See Kunzang Pelden, Nectar of Manjushri’s Speech, 16. Thus it is shown that Arhats suffer from a limitation in their knowledge. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha, they are not omniscient. Since the Arhats are beyond samsara, however, their ignorance cannot be described as defiled. And, Shāntideva asks, just as the Arhats with remainder have an undefiled ignorance, why should they not also have an undefiled craving?
