It could be argued that there is nothing certain in this refutation. For on the level of method, there is a difference between the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna in the elimination of the things to be discarded. To this we can only reply that if primordial wisdom, which realizes what is to be realized and is free of any deficiency in doing so, does not eliminate what is to be eliminated, then no further elimination is possible. For in that case, even if the primordial wisdom were present, it would be powerless to eliminate what is to be eliminated; and that would be like saying that darkness is not dispelled by the rising of the sun. The extraordinary primordial wisdom of realization cannot be generated without extraordinary methods. And it must be asserted that if this wisdom does not come to birth, it will be impossible to put an end to all that is to be eliminated. One ought not to say that one is in possession of the primordial wisdom of realization from the very beginning but that the elimination of what is to be eliminated depends on something else. Such a thing is fit only to make the learned laugh.
