Furthermore, the root of the perfect doctrine, on which depends its duration, is the perfect monk. To be a perfect monk, however, is extremely difficult. It is said that there are five categories of men who receive the designation "monk.” There are those who are simply called "Monk,” those whose vows have degenerated, those who are just the recipients of alms, those who are fully ordained, and those who have abandoned defilement. Of these, the first three are monks only in name. The last two are the best kind, and it is they who are the root of the doctrine. Of these, the supreme monk in the ultimate sense is the one who has abandoned defilement. This is difficult [for the Shrāvakas] to achieve because it is impossible for them to realize the truth that brings about the elimination of defilement. For, as they themselves admit, they do not possess an understanding of emptiness, which is the true nature of phenomena. Furthermore, since the assertions of the various subschools are not in agreement, the condition of a fully ordained monk is also a matter of controversy, with all the implications discussed earlier.52Presumably that the texts of the Vinaya scriptures would also have to be rejected as inauthentic.
