So again, on what grounds do they claim that their scriptures are authentic? Since there is no intrinsic link between the scriptures and the people concerned (that is, the present Shrāvakas), these scriptures cannot, for them, be established from the first as authoritative.51Presumably this means that since the Shrāvakas contemporary with Shāntideva cannot, on their own authority, ratify either the content or composition of the Hīnayāna scriptures (for they were not present when these texts came into existence), simply to claim that the Hīnayāna scriptures are authentic would be peremptory and dogmatic. |
