Of course, it is in the Mahāyāna that the emptiness of all phenomena is expounded, and the Shrāvakas reject it because it frightens them. They have no understanding of this kind of emptiness and, on the contrary, they argue against it, boasting that they realize the personal no-self. This is a useless argument because, if emptiness is rejected, there is no possible antidote able to uproot the defilements completely. This is why the Prajñāpāramitā scriptures affirm that those who retain a belief in the reality of things are incapable of attaining any of the three types of enlightenment. As a matter of fact, even the attainment of the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot be reached without relying on emptiness—the perfection of wisdom—which is for this reason referred to as the mother of the four kinds of noble beings. The arguments for this will be given later.
