Since there can never be a relation between a truly existent mind and a truly nonexistent samsara, it follows that the mind propounded by the Chittamatrins has no object to accompany it: the self-knowing, self-illuminating mind is completely isolated. But if the mind is without an object, it is also "empty” of being a subject. Now, according to the Chittamatrins, when the "emptiness of subject and object” is actualized, ultimate reality is also actualized. Therefore, according to their argument, this means that all beings are Tathāgatas from the very beginning; and they are so without any striving on the path. If that is the case, where is the virtue in creating a philosophical system, stating that all phenomena are merely consciousness, proclaiming that they are "mind only”? Even though the Chittamatrins affirm that all is just the mind, meaning that nothing exists separate from the mind, and even though they claim to establish ultimate reality in terms of the voidness of the subject–object dichotomy, there is no need to refute dualistic appearance and there is no need to establish nonduality.36Because, according to the Cittamātra tenet, beings are already enlightened. So what is the use of such a system? If therefore one asserts that mental aspects do not exist, it follows that the appearances of samsara are groundless, with the result that all experience becomes impossible.
