One can see things at a great distance, or perceive things like treasure vases hidden under the earth, but the ointment itself is not visible even though it is very close to the eye. Further explanation is also possible. For whereas the treasure vase and the eye ointment, being of a different nature, can serve as an illustration for those whose proficiency in shamatha enables them to see the minds of others, they cannot serve as an illustration of self-seeing. In fact they undermine it. |
