| English | But although the Vijñanavadins are thus unable to demonstrate the real existence of the self-knowing mind through valid perception, they claim to establish it by inference. If, they say, the mind has no experience of itself (that is, if it does not know itself), it follows that it could not have had any experience of itself in the past; and this would render subsequent memory impossible. It would be like having a result without a corresponding cause. But how, they argue, does this square with the perception that, in the same way that we remember the experience of a former object, such as the color blue, we have the present memory of the consciousness that was the subject of the experience blue? |
