The meaning that the Chittamatrins intend is also unestablished. When it is said that "the flame illuminates itself,” this is understood and expressed by an object-knowing consciousness that is distinct from the flame. But when it is said that "the mind illuminates [or knows] itself,” by what mind is this conceived and expressed? Is that which knows the mind as self-illuminating just that very mind itself, or is it some other mind? It is not possible simply to affirm the first of these alternatives since this is precisely the matter being discussed and is not established. If, on the other hand, the mind needs to be known by a mind different from itself, we fall into an infinite regress and knowledge becomes impossible. Moreover, if these two minds are not simultaneous, there can be no knowledge of past moments, which have ceased, or of future moments, which have not yet occurred. On the other hand, if they are simultaneous, they must be independent of each other, in which case, knowledge is once again impossible.
