In short, the qualities of elimination and realization are perfected on the basis of the wisdom that is the principal aspect of the path, and it is taught that generosity and so on are ancillaries to this. Therefore wisdom is regarded as the chief and indispensable factor, thus demonstrating its extreme importance. The expression ‚"these branches" in the root text is sometimes considered to refer to concentration, the subject explained in the immediately preceding chapter. It should however be applied to all the pāramitās. The words "branches" and "for the sake of" are meant simply to show that wisdom is first and foremost (of all the pāramitās) and they should not be understood in any other way. The reason for interpreting the text in this way is that it thereby indicates why all those who wish to put a complete end to the sufferings of samsara should strenuously cultivate the wisdom that realizes suchness.[p.81]The Wisdom Chapter
