| English | As a diversion, his father arranged for him to be taken to various groves and gardens. On these journeys, he beheld the sufferings of old age, illness, and death, as well as the positive qualities of religious practice, and he asked his father to allow him to become a renunciate. His father did not grant his request. He bade him remain in the palace, provided every possible luxury, and ordered five hundred Shakya guards to encircle the palace in all four directions. On the seventh day, at midnight, by the blessings of the gods, the guards fell into deep slumber. Again, the Bodhisattva requested his father, who this time gave permission. |
