As has been explained step by step above, they are unaware that the nature of all compounded phenomena is impermanence. As a result, they live as if old age, which is changing of youth, and death which is the changing of life will never occur. While they are heedlessly indulging in excessive pleasure, first, old age and illness occur, and later, in an inevitable manner, death arrives and they are slaughtered and again fall into the lower realms where they experience unbearable suffering that destroys them. Therefore, they are the objects of great compassion. The sutra Advice to the King states:
