Madhyamika: If the self were the consciousness that perceives the five "just thatnesses,” such as sound, etc., this would imply that the self must exist at all times whether or not there is a sound, because the nature of the perceiver of sounds is permanent. But it would be impossible to prove it, because the perceiver of sound is explained on the basis of the existence of sound.
