English

Ultimately, as no single self exists to experience the suffering, there is no difference at all between oneself and others. Relatively, all the sufferings of self and others are equal in the sense that they are suffering. Therefore, exert oneself to dispel these sufferings. What is the use of the firm conviction, "I will dispel my own but not others’ sufferings?” There is no benefit whatsoever. Therefore it is right to meditate on the enlightenment thought of equality of self and other.[p.299]A Commentary on Shantideva's Engaging in the Conduct of the Bodhisattvas
