| English | Some may think, "However The White Lotus Sutra states that previously Shariputra generated enlightenment thought, made offerings to ten thousand Buddhas and venerated them. While he was performing the benefit of sentient beings, Mara Papiyan emanated in the form of a brahman and begged for Shariputra’s hand. Shariputra cut off his right hand and offered it to him with his left hand. Mara Papiyan refused to take it and went away, complaining that it was now soiled because the left hand is used only for touching impure things. Shariputra felt disappointed and abandoned his resolution of enlightenment thought. Even though he gave up his resolution, he later attained liberation and performed the benefit of sentient beings.” |
