| English | Since others are unaware of our negative states of mind, how can they set us on the path? For even if they have some slight knowledge of our physical and verbal misdeeds and tell us to refrain from them, they succeed only in irritating us and not in placing us on the path. By contrast, if we ourselves have brought our thoughts, words, and deeds onto the path, we will not be irrtated when we make mistakes and we will be able to return to the path again. In other words, we should be teachers unto ourselves. For example, if the mind is compared to a horse, mindfulness will be its rope and introspection its keeper. If we fail to keep a guard over our minds with mindfulness and introspection, we will be unable to persevere in the training. |
