When others speak well of his enemies, of the rivals of whom he is jealous, and so on, praising them for their qualities, and, when, in praising them, they experience a certain mental gratification, why, Shantideva asks, does his mind not take pleasure in praising them as well (in accordance with the principle "When good is talked about, you should follow suit”)—instead of speaking in a contrary sense? He ought to be happy; resentment is quite out of place.
