One of only five chapters in the Avataṃsaka with its own introductory narrative (nidāna), it presents a teaching by the bodhisattva Samantabhadra delivered after he enters a samādhi called sangs rgyas phal po che ("Multitude of Buddhas"). It immediately precedes the sūtra's final and longest chapter, the Gaṇḍavyūha.
