Abhidharmakośaṭīkā/Full text
The Abhidharmakośaṭīkā, known in Sanskrit by its own title Sphuṭārthā (“Clear Meaning”), is Yaśomitra's subcommentary on Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. It is the only complete commentary on the Bhāṣya to survive in the original Sanskrit, and has long served as the standard guide to Vasubandhu's often terse prose. Yaśomitra explains the Bhāṣya nearly line by line: he identifies the schools and opponents Vasubandhu argues against, traces the scriptural passages he alludes to, and fills in the examples and stories behind his technical points. He acknowledges a debt to the earlier commentators Guṇamati and Vasumitra, but says in his closing verses that he wrote this explanation because he was not satisfied with those of others. Translated into Tibetan by Viśuddhasiṃha and Kawa Peltsek (Ska ba dpal brtsegs), the work runs to sixty fascicles (bam po) and fills two volumes of the Derge Tengyur (gu and ngu). It should not be confused with Sthiramati's commentary on the Bhāṣya, the Tattvārthā (Toh 4421), which is also sometimes called a ṭīkā.
