Prince Shōtoku
574 – 622
Prince Shōtoku (Shōtoku Taishi 聖徳太子, 574–622) was a regent of the Japanese court under Empress Suiko and is traditionally honored as the founding patron of Buddhism in Japan. He is credited with the Seventeen-Article Constitution and with the "Commentaries on Three Sūtras" (Sangyō gisho) on the Śrīmālā, Lotus, and Vimalakīrti sūtras, though modern scholars have questioned these attributions.
