D. Amarasiri Weeraratne

D. Amarasiri Weeraratne was a prominent Sri Lankan Buddhist scholar, writer, and propagator of the Dhamma, who significantly contributed to Buddhist discourse in Sri Lanka. He was born in 1941 and passed away on March 1, 2023, at the age of 82. Weeraratne was educated at Kingswood College in Kandy and later served as a government officer in various departments, including health and forestry, before dedicating his life to the study and promotion of Buddhism after retirement.

Weeraratne was a prolific writer, contributing numerous articles to established Buddhist journals such as The Buddhist of the Colombo YMBA and Vesak Lipi. His writings often addressed significant topics within Buddhism, including the establishment of the Bhikkhuni Order and interpretations of core Buddhist doctrines like Anatta (non-self) and meditation practices. He was fluent in both English and Sinhala, which allowed him to reach a broad audience through newspapers and public discussions.
