Trubner & Co.

Trübner & Co. was a London-based publishing house and bookselling firm founded by Nicholas Trübner (1817–1884), a German-born publisher who became one of the most important figures in the dissemination of Oriental and American scholarship in Victorian Britain. Trübner studied Sanskrit under Theodor Goldstücker and built extensive business connections with publishers and scholars in the United States, India, and across Asia. In 1865 he launched Trübner's American and Oriental Literary Record, a monthly register of significant publications from North and South America, India, China, and the British colonies, which kept scholars internationally informed of new scholarship. In 1878 he inaugurated Trübner's Oriental Series, which became undoubtedly the most important English-language series in Oriental studies of the period, publishing works on Asian, African, and Middle Eastern languages, literatures, religion, and philosophy between 1878 and 1930. After Trübner's death in 1884 the firm was absorbed into Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., which continued the Oriental Series and remained a major publisher of scholarly works on Asian religions and philology well into the twentieth century.
