Société Asiatique
The Société Asiatique is a French learned society dedicated to the study of Asia, founded on April 1, 1822, with the mission of developing and diffusing knowledge of Asia, with interests ranging from the Maghreb to the Far East. Its establishment was confirmed by royal ordinance on April 15, 1829, with Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy as its first president. The society is best known for publishing the Journal asiatique, one of the oldest continuously published French academic journals, established in 1822 and covering Asian studies in French and other European languages. The society currently has about 700 members in France and abroad, and its library contains over 90,000 volumes. Notable members have included Eugène Burnouf, Jean-François Champollion, Sylvain Lévi, Paul Pelliot, and Gaston Maspero. The Journal asiatique is currently published by Peeters Publishers on behalf of the Société Asiatique and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Read more here.
