Healing the Divide

Healing the Divide is a nonprofit foundation founded by actor Richard Gere, dedicated to bridging cultural divides and building connections between people around the world, with a particular focus on supporting the Tibetan people and the Himalayan region. The organization is best known for its 2003 benefit concert, "Healing the Divide: A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation," held at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall during a 20-day U.S. tour by the Dalai Lama, and later released as a live album featuring the Dalai Lama, Philip Glass, Anoushka Shankar, the Gyuto Tantric Choir, and Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet. Proceeds from the organization's projects, including the concert album, have historically supported the Healing the Divide / Tibetan Health Initiative, which provides health insurance and medical care to impoverished Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns living in refugee settlements. Healing the Divide has partnered repeatedly with The Tibet Center over more than two decades to organize teachings and public events with the Dalai Lama in New York, including major visits in 2003, 2007, and 2010.
