The AISS, the Italian Association of Sanskrit Studies, was established by notarial deed in 1976 in Avigliana (Turin). The first President of the AISS was Professor Oscar Botto, appointed by those appearing in the deed of incorporation: Professors Stefano Piano, Mario Piantelli, Mariangela Chiodo D'Onza, Oscar Botto himself, and Drs. Emanuela Panattoni and Pinuccia Caracchi. The Association's headquarters, initially located at the Institute of Indology in Turin, was later moved to CESMEO, first at Via Cavour 17, then at Corso Trento 13. As stated in its Statute , the Italian Association of Sanskrit Studies is "free, independent, apolitical, and non-profit" and is "open to all scholars of Sanskrit and enthusiasts of that discipline and Indological studies." The AISS "is a cultural association that aims to promote and coordinate Sanskrit studies and related disciplines in Italy, to maintain contact with the IASS (International Association of Sanskrit Studies), and to jointly promote scientific and cultural initiatives." Since its inception, the AISS has been a member of the International Association of Sanskrit Studies, whose statute and objectives it accepts.
