Numata Center for Buddhist Translation and Research
Numata Center for Buddhist Translation and Research is a nonprofit organization founded in November 1984 in Berkeley, California, to assist in the publication of the BDK English Tripiṭaka — a major project to translate the classical Chinese Mahāyāna Buddhist canon into English. The Center was established to coordinate this translation work between committees in Tokyo and the United States, as well as with the university-based Numata Programs in Buddhist Studies, and its Publication Committee (organized in December 1991) has overseen the editorial process for the BDK English Tripiṭaka First Series.
The Center traces its origins to Rev. Dr. Yehan Numata (1897–1994), founder of Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai (BDK, the "Society for the Promotion of Buddhism") in Japan in 1965, whose central aims were to widely distribute The Teaching of Buddha — a compilation of basic Buddhist scriptures now translated into over 40 languages — and to translate the entire Chinese Buddhist canon into English. After operating in Berkeley for its first three decades, the Center's operations were consolidated with BDK America, which relocated to Moraga, California, in 2015. Today it continues to publish scholarly English translations of Buddhist sūtras, treatises, and commentaries as part of the ongoing BDK English Tripiṭaka project.
