Maruzen

Maruzen (丸善) was established in 1869 by Yuteki Hayashi at the urging of educator Yukichi Fukuzawa. Originally known as Maruya Shosha, it opened its first store in Yokohama before adding a Tokyo outlet in Nihonbashi in 1870. From its founding the company sought out, translated, published and sold Western scholarly works, and played a central role in Japan's Meiji-era modernization. It began publishing Hyakka Zensho, a 12-volume summary of European knowledge, in 1883, and added the Encyclopaedia Britannica to its catalog in 1902. Over subsequent decades it became one of Japan's leading academic publishers and booksellers. Maruzen is now part of Maruzen-Yushodo Company, Limited (丸善雄松堂株式会社), headquartered in Chūō-ku, Tokyo.
