The Indian Institute of Advanced Study came into being on the 6 October 1964, as an autonomous society, fully funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The then President of India, Professor Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan inaugurated the Institute on the 20 October 1965. He imagined the Institute as a place that would support a free and creative inquiry into the themes and problems of life and thought. As a residential centre for advanced research, it encourages creative thinking in areas of deep human significance. The environment of the Institute is eminently suitable for academic pursuits, especially in areas of the Humanities, Indian Culture, Religion, Literature, Philosophy and Social Sciences. From time to time, other fields of research are added. As the nation’s premier institution, deliberating on these issues today, the Institute provides facilities for consultation and collaboration on fundamental aspects of the human condition. It has an extensive library collection and offers modern communication and documentation facilities and stands as a tribute to the idea of India and the world that Professor Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan aspired for.
