Description

Based on the teachings of the Buddha, this book offers the most compelling and impassioned indictment of meat-eating to be found in Tibetan literature and is pertinent to anyone interested in vegetarianism as a moral or spiritual issue. The Buddha's teachings show how destructive habits can be examined and transformed gradually from within. The aim is not to repress one's desire for meat and animal products by force of will, but to develop heartfelt compassion and sensitivity to the suffering of animals, so that the desire to exploit and feed on them naturally dissolves.

There are two texts presented here. One is an excerpt from Shabkar's Book of Marvels, consisting of quotations from the Buddhist scriptures and the teachings of masters of Tibetan Buddhism that argue against the consumption of meat, with Shabkar's commentary. The second, the Nectar of Immortality, is Shabkar's discourse on the importance of developing compassion for animals. (Source: Shambhala Publications)

Classical WorksAbout this item
The Nectar of lmmortality is a fully developed discourse in its own right. It is Shabkar's most powerful and concentrated statement on the subject [of meat-eating] and constitutes what must rank as one of the most impassioned indictments of meat eating to be found in Tibetan literature. This text was recently rediscovered, in manuscript form, by Matthieu Ricard in the course of a visit to Amdo in 2001. It was found in a monastery in the Shophon Valley, not far from Rekong where many yogis and practitioners of Shabkar's lineage still live. (Food of Bodhisattvas, 45)

Classical WorksAbout this item
The Wondrous Emanated Scripture (Rmad byung sprul pa'i glegs bam) is a text by Shabkar Tsokdruk Rangdrol composed in response to requests from a named group of students and patrons, primarily monks and meditators associated with Tashikhyil Monastery in the Rebkong region of Amdo. The stated occasion for composition was Shabkar's observation that practitioners were neglecting love and compassion, disregarding karma, and engaging in meat-eating, alcohol, and other nonvirtuous conduct. The text was written at the Sukhāvatī temple at Trashikhyil hermitage in Rebkong, Amdo—identified as the birthplace of the Seventh Dalai Lama Kelzang Gyatso, south of Tsongkhapa's birthplace and east of Central Tibet. The purpose stated in the colophon is to provide practical instructions benefiting the minds of the requesting students and future generations, and to reduce attachment. (Source: BDRC)
