Association of Esoteric Buddhist Studies
Association of Esoteric Buddhist Studies (密教研究会, Mikkyō Kenkyūkai) is the publishing body, based at Kōyasan University, behind Mikkyō Bunka (密教文化, "Journal of Esoteric Buddhism"), a Japanese academic journal published continuously since January 1947. Kōyasan is the mountain monastic complex founded in the early 9th century by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), founder of the Shingon school of Japanese esoteric Buddhism, and the journal's English-language subtitle has shifted over the decades, appearing as "Quarterly Reports on Esoteric Buddhism" through 1997 and as "Journal of Esoteric Buddhism" since. It covers Mikkyō (esoteric Buddhism) broadly—Shingon doctrine and history, Kūkai studies, ritual and iconography—as well as Indian and Tibetan Buddhist textual and manuscript scholarship, and remains in active publication, with issue numbers in the 250s as of the early 2020s.
