Asher
A. Asher & Co. was a Berlin bookselling and publishing firm founded in 1830 by Adolphus Asher (1800–1853). The firm placed particular emphasis on the import and export of books between continental Europe and England, becoming a principal supplier of European books to the Oxford Library and the British Museum, and later expanded into publishing. After Asher's death, the firm passed to his employees Albert Cohn and Daniel Collin in 1853, growing over the following decades with a focus on ethnological, English-language, and Hebrew literature—and, by the 1880s, on Orientalist scholarship as well, publishing works such as this proceedings volume from the 1881 International Congress of Orientalists in Berlin. The firm continued under successive owners into the 20th century before its 1933 "Aryanization" under Nazi policy; a successor firm, A. Asher & Co. B.V., was re-founded in Amsterdam in 1947 and continues to operate today.
