Description
This article by Japanese Buddhist scholar Kumataro Kawada examines the concepts of transcendence and immanence as they apply to bodhicitta, treating the subject as a methodological problem in the universal history of philosophy. Kawada argues that while Buddhist philosophy has long analyzed the transcendent dimension of bodhicitta—its orientation toward awakening beyond saṃsāra—the immanent dimension, the bodhisattva's return to saṃsāra to continue the work of liberation (apratisthitanirvāṇa), is equally essential. Drawing on a range of canonical sources including the Pāli Aṅguttaranikāya, the Daśabhūmikasūtra, the Saddharmapuṇḍarīkasūtra, and the Laṅkāvatārasūtra, Kawada traces the relationship between bodhicitta and dharmatā (the nature of reality) across exoteric and esoteric Buddhist traditions. He concludes with a methodological proposal: rather than asserting an absolute claim to truth, Buddhist philosophy should employ the transcendence-immanence dynamic of bodhicitta as a tool for self-critical engagement with other philosophical traditions in a genuinely universal history of philosophy.
